E. Brian Kelly – Painter of Canada’s Seasons of Colour
My Story
The occasional image of Artists, wearing a beret, sporting a cigarette holder and living in a messy garret studio, is not me. I hardly see myself fitting this somewhat popular image. Rather, I see myself as an athlete, a maker of things, a family man and, oh yes, a painter of Canada’s beautiful places and glorious colours in all its seasons.
Many years ago, after a visit to Canada’s National Art Gallery, I felt a powerful urge to paint the scenes and colours of Canada’s mountains, lakes and woodlands. I was in my early 30s and immediately enrolled in art schools in both London, Ontario and Ottawa for the next 6 years. I learned the basics of drawing, perspective, colour and design. Painting outdoors during those formative years, with other aspiring artist-friends and professionals, was inspiring, encouraging, and great fun. Nearby Gatineau Park was our regular painting destination.
Joining art associations in the Ottawa area gave me opportunities to exhibit my work and to receive feedback from the discerning public. I subsequently presented my work through art galleries, home exhibitions and art festivals in Ottawa, Toronto, and other Canadian venues across the country. The public seemed to like my work and painting sales were encouraging.
At the age of 40, I decided to devote myself full-time to art, strike out on my own to paint and exhibit my work on a full-time basis. Thankfully, my family was supportive of my leap of folly! As events unfolded, it all worked out. We all survived, and I enjoyed a wonderful and satisfying life as a landscape artist.
I’ve included a few paintings below representing my painting style, the subject matter that inspires me, and the lively colour palette that attracts me.
